Dr. Danny L. Stewart

Regional Minister


Dr. Danny L. Stewart began serving as the Regional Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Mid-America (CCMA) in January 2002. Upon his arrival in Jefferson City, MOwhere he works and livesDanny began working closely with pastors, church leaders, congregations, and lay folks on formulating plans for the future of the Regionalways keeping in mind the Regions mission.


This native Texan was born on the Gulf Coast at Beaumont and resided in Dallas through his elementary and secondary education. Danny completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1967, graduating Magna cum laude from Baylor University. He completed his seminary work, receiving the Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth in 1972. His formal education includes a Doctor of Philosophy degree, in Religion and Philosophy, which he received from Baylor in 1977.


Danny has extensive experience in the pastorate. After completing his education and his service in student churches, he began his Disciples ministries as Associate Minister at First Christian Church, Abilene, Texas, serving from 1978-81. He served as Senior Minister at First Christian Church, Sulphur Springs, Texas, from 1981-90. He then served as Senior Minister to the multiple staff congregation at Central Christian Church, Ft. Worth, Texas. Danny also served as the Area Minister for the Hi-Plains Area of the Christian Church in the Southwest from 1996-2001. In all, he brings more than thirty years of ministerial experience to Regional work.

Dr. Stewart has ministered beyond the local congregation while serving as pastor. He has been instrumental in the formation of the Northeast Texas Food Bank, the Hopkins County Chaplaincy Program, and the Northeast Texas Food pantry. He has served eight years as an advisor to the Texas Department of Human Resources. While completing his education, Danny served as the Cottage Life director of the Waco State Home for Children.


Dr. Stewart also brings years of experience in Area missions, having served in the Central, Northeast and Trinity-Brazos Areas of the Southwest Region in a variety of roles. He has been a long-time advocate for children and youth, directing and counseling in summer camps and programs, keynoting events and serving on commissions for children and youth ministries. He also has given leadership in education and preparation for ministry, serving as a Theological Reflection Group leader at Brite Divinity School for three years and sharing in the development of programs for training and nurture of licensed ministers.


Deepening of the spiritual life is a special concern to Danny. He has been a participant in the Bethany Project, which has as its goal the enlivening of the church through prayer. Among his passions in ministry is the strong emotional, spiritual health of congregations, believing that such vitality is essential to the birthing of new congregations and new ministries.


Danny and his wife Nina are the proud parents of three grown daughters and one son and their spouses: Dana and Javier Pedroche, who reside in Puebla, Mexico: Donna and James Martin, who reside in St, James, Missouri; Christine and Garrett Thorne, who reside in West Lafayette, Indiana: and Doug and Samantha Shaul, who reside in Rock Hill, South Carolina. They are also the ecstatic grandparents of seven: Javier, Marisa and Anna Bel Pedroche, and Sarah, Jonathon (Jack) and Margaret (Maggie Sue) Martin and Chase Alexander Shaul.
