Mid-America Christian FoundationQ: WHAT IS THE LEGACY SOCIETY? A: The Christian Church of Mid-America Legacy society is a group of visionaries who have made provisions for the future ministry of The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) by naming the Mid-America Christian Foundation in their last will and testament. Q: HOW CAN I BECOME A MEMBER? A: Anyone can be a member. It is simple. First you must have your own will. We all have a will in some sense but unless we have the legal document outlining our last wishes, the state will make those decisions for us. The will that the state writes for you may not reflect your wishes at all! It will certainly not make any provision for the church. Next, you must name the Mid-American Christian Foundation as a beneficiary in your will and notify the Foundation in writing that you have done so. Any amount will be appreciated, however a permanent named fund requires a minimum bequest of $1,000. Q: WHAT CAN I LEAVE TO THE FOUNDATION? A: There are many possibilities. It is important that you consider the tax benefits to your other heirs if you are leaving the Foundation only part of your estate. The Mid-America Christian Foundation is tax-exempt so that needs to be part of your planning as you decide what to leave to individuals and what to leave to the Foundation. Almost any asset can be left to the Foundation but it is wise to talk with a Foundation representative ahead of time if you plan to leave something other than cash or marketable securities. | There are also many ways you can divide your estate with the Mid-America Christian Foundation and others. You may leave the Foundation a specific asset or amount, a remainder after you have named what you want others to have, or a certain percentage of your estate. Q: WHO CAN BENEFIT? A: Any entity of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) can benefit from a gift to the Mid-America Christian Foundation. It can be the local congregation, an Area, the Region, or any General Unit of the Church or a gift can even be divided with approved non-Disciple entities. These gifts can be further designated to reflect your interest and passion. One consideration about making your designation too specific however is that these are gifts which will be working from now on and the future needs of the church will probably look very different than the present ones!
