About the Commission:
The season of Pentecost reminds us that the people of God are called to move beyond our comfort limits. Part of moving beyond those comfortable limits is recognizing that the inclusive nature of the church is broken by racism and its root causes. The Commission on Mission and Unity is charged with helping congregations mend that brokenness. Sometimes that is just not comfortable.
The Commission on Mission and Unity actively supports Mid-America's work as a Global Mission Region. As a Global Mission Region, Mid-America makes commitments to supporting and hosting international missionaries. As missionaries become available, they are connected with congregations where the stories of Christ's work are shared.
We also are responsible to allocating the gifts received in the autumn Reconciliation Offering. During the grant process, the commission adds it supports to programs that work at dismantling institutional racism, such as funding for the Regions Anti-Racism/Pro-Reconciliation Team. We also join with congregations and not-for-profits who are working on a person-by-person basis to combat the root causes of racism. Some of these projects include funding camperships for children of color and multi-racial VBS programs.
We work actively to get more persons in the region trained as Mission and Ministry Interpreters. MMIs assist congregations and organizations in understanding the global church.
The Commission on Mission and Unity is thankful for the many congregations and individuals who step outside their comfort zone and bring healing to their communities.
Missionary from India to visit Mid-America:
Word has just been received that Dr. Anil Henry and his family will be in the Mid-America Region sharing their work as medical missionaries among the poorest of the poor in India. They are scheduled to arrive in July and stay through August. They will be guests of Danny and Nina Stewart during their stay. Arrangements are underway to have them share their stories with youth at CRY and to visit as many congregations and groups as possible during their stay. If you would like to arrange a visit to a gathering of folk from congregations in your vicinity, please contact Dr. Danny Stewart at the Regional Disciple Mission Center or by e-mail at danny-ccma@socket.net.
