Disciples Women Gathering

Disciples Women Gathering

All are welcome to join us for this monthly gathering. Join us from the comfort of your home, car, church, wherever you have internet.

Our Bible study from the Just Women brought to us by Rev. Cisa Payuyo and Rev. Dr. Miseon Choi titled ‘A Journey of Faith with God's QI: The Promise of the Holy Spirit’ scripture reference John 3:1-9

Questions to ponder:

  1. Nicodemus had to overcome potential obstacles and concerns to approach Jesus. He risked his standing as a member of the elite; he opened his mind to new understandings and teachings about the life of faith. Have you ever had to overcome obstacles, take a risk, or change your beliefs due to your encounters with Jesus?

  2. Have you ever experienced the life - giving Qi? If so, when, and where did it happen, and what was your experience like?

  3. How can we actively practice the QI of God/God's love, justice, and mercy - in our daily lives and relationships, both individually and as a community, to embody our new identity in Christ?

There will be no regular gathering in April due to Holy Week and many other events.

Ethical Boundaries Training

Ethical Boundaries Training

  • First Christian Church, Sedalia (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This training is based in an understanding that loving God with heart, soul, and mind and loving neighbor as self are the core principles that undergird all clergy ethics. It recognizes that God desires that each individual flourish and experience abundant living. Therefore, ethical living seeks to answer questions in a changing and complex world about how we can love God, love neighbor as self, and create space and opportunities for all individuals to flourish in all areas of life. Furthermore, it asserts that commissioned and ordained ministers are called by the community from within the community to serve and nurture it through leadership roles. Ministry is a vocation and professional ethical norms of other caring professions are the floor upon which clergy ethics are constructed. Undergirded by these believes, Choices for Abundant Living seeks to provide time and space for commissioned and ordained clergy to consider and discuss what it means for individuals:

  1. To flourish as they establish healthy relationships built on empathy, kindness, mutual respect, and trust;

  2. To engage in open communications that provides for problem solving, conflict resolution, opportunities to give and receive forgiveness;

  3. To develop an understanding and respect of values, believes, and attitudes of others, even if they differ;

  4. To acknowledge the independence and connectedness of each person.

Small group activities and discussion of case studies will allow commissioned and ordained clergy to reflect upon their values, their call to live within the standards set by My Code of Ethics of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and the importance of boundaries as they seek to make ethical decisions and act in ways guided by the principles of non-maleficence, veracity, and confidentiality.

Safe Sanctuary Training
May

Safe Sanctuary Training

It is the mission of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) to work for healing in a fragmented world. We recognize that the world is never more fragmented than when violence and abuse occur against those most vulnerable in our society. It becomes even more fragmented when said violence and abuse is perpetrated against or by a member of the church.

As a community of faith, we must be committed to creating and maintaining programs, facilities; and a community in which members, friends, staff and volunteers can worship, learn, and work together in an atmosphere free from all forms of discrimination, harassment, exploitation or intimidation. This is not only good policy, most insurance carriers mandate congregations have a Safe Sanctuary Policy and require regular training.

The cost is $20 per congregation that participates - NOT PER PERSON. Cost includes all materials. Registrations are due by Wednesday, April 29 at midnight. Register online now>

Women Empowering Women in Ministry

Women Empowering Women in Ministry

  • First Christian Church, Jefferson City (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Our Women Empowering Women is just what it says, this group of women has been formed to help, nurture, empower, and give voice to women in ministry and find ways to not only keep women in their many roles of ministry but to also encourage others.

We want to provide a safe place where we can find others that we bond spiritually with from across the miles, women we might not otherwise have had the opportunity to connect with.

We want to keep women in all aspects of ministry throughout our region, and beyond! Women are vital and we need opportunities to be together and share, find spiritual partners, and sift through the challenges that we face, and learn ways to cope and share with others; finding new insights from those who have walked in our steps before and those who have witnessed those walking in these steps.

Women in many rolls of ministry and about ministry. I know some very strong, creative, and wise women who have been surrounded by and infused in ministry that have not necessarily been in ministry roles who could nurture and provide needed sources of encouragement for us all.

Women, many women supported Christ, supported the church. Women, the last at the cross, the first at the tomb, the first to witness the Risen Christ and the first to be told to go and tell them.

Women, we are needed and we must stand strong, and be Church!

Bridgeton Fund Grant applications due

The Bridgeton Christian Church Fund is an endowment created by the former Bridgeton Christian Church when it closed in 1995. Purpose of the fund, as stipulated by the congregation, is three-fold:

  • To meet monetary shortfalls due to unexpected strife in a church;

  • To help a church underwrite "revitalization/renewal" of its congregation;

  • To help meet property/structural damage caused by an act of God or other circumstances and not caused by neglect.

Guidelines stipulate that the Fund shall be used to meet a church's temporary financial need, as long as the need was not created by "overextension of a budget or repetitive under-funding of a budget by the congregation".

Any Mid-America congregation may apply for a grant. The committee will review applications to determine whether they meet the fund's requirements.

Drawn from Hebrews 12:1-3, the retreat theme is “Resilience: Remembering, Reclaiming, and Recommitting to Black Communities.” The writer of Hebrews encourages the community to persevere, focus, and maintain their faith despite the current complications and chaos before them. The writer acknowledges that people’s ability to thrive and persevere is rooted in the faithful model and ministry of Jesus Christ, the cloud of witnesses, and their many stories of steadfast resistance. This sankofa-like moment enabled God’s people to keep going, which serves as a good model for African American clergy, leaders, and communities navigating chaos today. We have planned a time of refreshment, learning, and remembrance that will inspire and empower us all,

Conversation Cafe for Congregations - postponed

February 12: We have just learned that this event is being postponed until April. More information will be published as it becomes available.

This month’s topic is Community Partnerships: Expanding Congregational Capacity & Relevancy.

Conversation Café is a bi-monthly virtual event designed to bring together Disciple pastors, lay leaders, and church staff from across the country to discuss, reflect on, and engage with relevant resources for congregational life and innovation. We will explore topics like creating or reflecting on guiding statements (Mission, Vision, Values) for a congregation, community partnerships, ethnographic evaluations for local communities, and more. This one-hour lunchtime session offers participants a chance to be Church together and share resources that help our congregations thrive in their local contexts. People can grab a meal, settle at their computer or tablet, and join the conversation.

Brought to us by Disciples Home Missions’ Congregational Vitality and Innovation.

Together, we will explore emotional and spiritual responses and share stories in the face of current ecological and social challenges.

Women Empowering Women in Ministry
Feb

Women Empowering Women in Ministry

  • First Christian Church, Macon (map)

Please RSVP to Rev. Jennifer Long at jennifer.ccma@sbcglobal.net. See flyer here>

Safe Sanctuary Training

Safe Sanctuary Training

  • Community CC, Jefferson City (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This event was originally scheduled for January 24, but was changed due to
dangerous traveling weather predicted for that day.

In 2026, Rev. Zane Whorton and Rev. David Woodard will be leading Safe Sanctuary training for congregations throughout our Region. The first training will take place on Saturday, January 24 at Community Christian Church in Jefferson City from 10-1. The cost is $20 per congregation that participates - NOT PER PERSON. Cost includes materials and lunch. Registrations are due by Wednesday, January 28 at midnight. Register online now>

More dates/locations will be added so that a training can take place relatively close to everyone.

Disciples Women Gathering

All are welcome to join us for this monthly gathering.

Our next Bible study from the Just Women comes to us from Rev. Charisna Jean-Marie titled: "As the Holy Spirit Wills'. Her scripture reference comes from Acts 2:1- 4.

Her questions are:

  1. How do communal practices in the black church reflect the principles seen in Acts 2?

  2. Consider moments in your own life or in community history where empowerment has led to significant change.

  3. How can the principles in Acts 2 guide modern congregations in their pursuit of social justice?

  4. When was the first and last time you had a physical experience with the Holy Spirit? How did you respond? What changed within you? What stayed the same?
